Condemning the Kabul University attack, US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has said that the right response to this attack is that the Taliban and Afghan government must unite and accelerate a political settlement.

At least 22 people including students were killed and 22 injured when gunmen stormed Kabul University on Monday. This was the second attack on an educational institution in the capital in just over a week.

According to Reuters, Afghan security forces shot the gunmen dead. Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a tweet, Khalilzad condemned the barbaric attack on the university and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. He further said that this attack is not an opportunity for the Afghan government and the Taliban to score points against each other.

He added that there was a common enemy and the government and the Taliban must unite for peace and deny ISIS or any other terrorist the space to carry out these inhumane acts.

"Find a path to a ceasefire, and accelerate a political settlement. These steps would be the right response to this unspeakable barbarism," he urged.

On Monday, Khalilzad met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in Rawalpindi. They discussed the Afghan peace process, with particular reference to border management, and the way forward for lasting peace in Afghanistan.
