ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday reviewed initial report of its combined investigation team (CIT) constituted to probe sugar subsidy scam, and expressed the resolve that strict action would be taken against those who illegally obtained sugar subsidy.

An official said that the CIT’s report was reviewed in a meeting presided over by Chairman NAB, former Justice Javed Iqbal and was attended by other senior officials of the anti-graft body.

The NAB, on August 5, constituted a CIT headed by the DG NAB Rawalpindi, Irfan Naeem Mangi, to investigate the sugar subsidy scam.

The CIT also consisted of experts having experience in sugar industry, two investigation officers, financial experts, legal counsel, and forensic experts.

Mangi said that during the meeting the chairman NAB directed members of the CIT to complete the investigation in an impartial, independent, and transparent manner. The CIT should obtain details about the subsidy from all the provinces, financial and audit reports of relevant companies, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, among other institutes, to investigate the matter properly, the chairman NAB said.

The chairman NAB also issued directives to the CIT that all concerned persons and departments should be given full opportunity to defend themselves in accordance with the law.

Action will be taken against those who illegally availed sugar subsidy, and incurred loss worth billions of rupees to the national exchequer, the chairman NAB said.
