Treason case filed against Nawaz, Maryam for conspiring against Pakistan’s state institutions

The Punjab authorities have booked former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and other Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders on treason charges.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered by a citizen, Badar Rasheed, against Sharif in Shahdara police station in Lahore. The case has been registered under the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal conspiracy.

The FIR has been registered against the PML-N leader for making provocative speeches in London against Pakistan's high courts and armed forces in front of the international community, local media reported.

Rasheed said that the Sharif is trying to declare Pakistan a rogue state and turning the people against the democratically elected government.

The complainant alleged that in the recent speeches, Sharif supported the policies of India, so that Pakistan would continue to remain on the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) 'grey list'. The aim of Sharif's speeches is also to divert attention from human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, the complainant said.

Other PML-N leaders Rana Sanaullah, Ahsan Iqbal, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Pervez Rashid, Marriyum Aurangzeb, and others have also been named in the case.
