ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has constituted a combined investigation team (CIT) to investigate the recent sugar scam and sugar subsidy.

According to an official statement issued by the NAB, the decision to this effect was taken in a meeting presided over by NAB Chairman Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal and also attended by NAB Deputy Chairman Hussain Asghar, Prosecutor General NAB Asghar Haider, Director General (DG) Operations Tahir Shah, DG NAB Rawalpindi Irfan Naeem Mangi, and other senior officials.

It says that the meeting reviewed the sugar inquiry commission report in detail.

The meeting decided to conduct transparent investigation into sugar subsidy given to mill owners on export.

The DG NAB Rawalpindi will head the CIT and it will consist of experts having experience in sugar industry, two investigations officers, financial experts, legal counsel, and forensic experts.

The chairman NAB, the deputy chairman NAB, the prosecutor general (accountability), and the DG (operations) would review the report of the joint team every month at the NAB headquarters.

The statement says to ensure neutral, transparent and on merit probe, all relevant details about the sugar subsidy would be sought from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and others, so that the sugar subsidy issue could be probed thoroughly.

The NAB chairman has directed to complete the probe of the sugar subsidy on merit, in a transparent and professional way, and all concerned individuals and departments should be given ample opportunity to defend themselves and to prove their innocence.

Action will only be proceeded as per the law against those who received subsidy on sugar illegally and looted billions of rupees, it says.
