French President Nicolas Sarkozy's approval rating rebounded to a five-month high, a poll found on Sunday, the latest sign that his high-visibility role in battling the eurozone debt crisis is helping him with voters.
The survey of 1,002 people by pollster Opinionway for Metro newspaper was the latest to find Sarkozy narrowing the gap with Socialist rival Francois Hollande five months before a presidential election.
Even with a four percentage point improvement, Sarkozy's approval rating only recovered to 34 percent. That was still behind Hollande, who dropped 3 percentage points to 53 percent.
Sarkozy's approval ratings for handling the eurozone economic crisis and French budget crunch, at 38 percent, were slightly higher than his overall rating. But that meant 62 percent of those polled disapproved of his handling of the crisis.
Sarkozy last week unveiled a package of 18.6 billion euros ($26 billion) of savings over two years.
