LUMS hosted a lecture by the renowned British Author, Karen Armstrong. The lecture was held on Friday and was hosted by The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS. Karen Armstrong is one of the world's leading commentators on religious affairs and a best-selling author, whose books have been translated into over forty languages.
Her early work focused in the monotheistic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but she has since begun to explore eastern religions. Her work is scholarly but written for the general reader, and has been appreciated not only by western audiences but by Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus.
In February 2008, Karen Armstrong won the TED Prize and wished for helping in creating, launching and propagating the Charter for Compassion: a document that transcends religious, ideological, and national difference. Supported by leading thinkers from many traditions, the Charter inspires world-wide community-based acts of compassion.
Her visit to Pakistan coincides with the launch of her two books "12 Steps to a Compassionate Life" and "A Letter to Pakistan" a book especially written for the people of Pakistan. Karen discussed local initiatives being taken in Pakistan and how students and faculty can contribute in identifying shared moral priorities across religious traditions, in order to foster global understanding.-PR
