PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly told Monday that the total number of industrial units in the province is 2655 out of which 2293 are operational while 362 have been closed.

The information was given in response to the question of Syed Jaffar Shah of ANP regarding the statistics of the operational and closed industrial units in the province.

Responding the question, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Mineral Development, Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli said that the revival of the closed industrial units is the top priority of the coalition government in the province.

For this purpose, she said the Industries Department had already established a committee comprising of the representatives of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Economic Zones Development and Management Company (KP-EZDMC), Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), and Small Industrial Development Board (SIDB) to give line to the management for the revival of the closed industrial units.

She said that most of the closed industrial units have been closed due to shortage of capital, marketing, skilled work force and legal complications.

The committee, the provincial minister said has so far held 12 sessions and in first phase it had initiated measures for the revival of the closed industrial units of Hayatabad Industrial Estate and due to which 23 have been revived.

She added that several units are closed due to financial difficulties and for their revival and sub-committee has requested the allocation of a fund of Rs.5 billion for the purpose. She said that beside financial problems, the provincial government is also making efforts for the resolution of other problems of the management of the closed industrial units.

Later, the house passed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mental Health Bill, 2017 and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Civil Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2017.
