Justice Saqib Nisar takes oath as new CJP
ISLAMABAD: Today, Justice Saqib Nisar on Saturday has taken oath as 25th Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Justice Nisar has replaced Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali whose tenure ended after 15 months since September 2015. Chief Justice Saqib Nisar will remain on this post until January 17, 2019, his retirement date. He has been a judge of the Supreme Court since February 18, 2010.
According to latest reports, President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath to new CJP in a ceremony held at President House in Islamabad.
Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, federal ministers, judges of the Supreme Court (SC), and chiefs of all three armed forces were present on the occasion.
Before taking charge as a judge of the Lahore High Court on May 22, 1998, he was an advocate of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Lahore High Court Bar Association between 1982 and 1998. He was elected secretary general of Lahore High Court Bar Association for the year 1991-1992. On March 29, 1997, Justice Saqib Nisar was also appointed as federal law secretary.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar will hold office for two years and eighteen days and would retire from his post on January 18, 2019 and will reconstitute the bench for repeat hearing of a politically sensitive case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.
