ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Azam Saigol has resigned on Monday due to personal reasons, PIA spokesman Danyal Gilani confirmed the resignation of the PIA chief.
The resignation comes days after PIA flight PK-661 crashed in Abbottabad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on way to Islamabad from Chitral, leaving all 47 passengers and crew members dead. After the , Saigol had claimed that there was no technical or human error leading the jet carrying 47 people to crash.
Former singer turned preacher Junaid Jamshed, his wife, DC Chitral, his wife, daughter and three foreigners were also on board the ill-fated ATR plane.
Although Saigol has cited personal reasons for the move, sources say he was under pressure to step down in the wake of Wednesdays deadly plane crash.
The development comes as PIA is under pressure and scrutiny following the crash of PK-661 and speculation that the national carrier does not follow international safety standards and procedures.
