Finding better and environmental friendly modes of transportation have become a necessity in order to curb the onslaught of global warming. Electrical vehicles, in particular are gaining popularity for being environmental friendly.
Fortunately, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) transport’s department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is set to introduce electronic rickshaws to overcome the pollution caused by the fossil fueled rickshaws in the province.
According to local media reports, these rickshaws are noiseless, moderately priced and most importantly environment friendly in the otherwise fossil-fuel dominated transport world.
Like other cities in Pakistan, rickshaws are a major source of transport in cities like Peshawar, which have 13,000 registered rickshaws alone. As per the Regional Transport Authority Secretary Naimatullah, the total number of rickshaws, registered and unregistered, in the city are over 50,000.
Most of these run two-stroke engines and are a major contributor to air and noise pollution. Peshawar is ranked world’s sixth most polluted city with an average air pollution of 17PPM (particles per million) and a consistent noise level of over 85 decibels, according to Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
As prices are concern, the E-Rickshaws are cost effective as well, which will cost about Rs 240,000, as compared to a regular rickshaw worth some Rs 300,000. The E-Rickshaw could carry 3-4 passengers, and run for 50 km on 80pc battery, and can be charged through any normal outlet i.e. 100V-240V.
The battery takes around two hours to attain 80% charging, while 7 hours for 100pc charging.
