WASHINGTON: The United States said Monday it is encouraged by the advance Libyan rebels are making on Moamer Qadhafi's stronghold in Tripoli.
"We are watching with considerable encouragement the advances the rebels have made," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters, referring to advances in Zawiyah, near the capital, and other places.
Rebels claimed they had seized control of most of Zawiyah, but forces loyal to Qadhafi on Monday shelled the center of the strategic port, Nuland said.
"What we're seeing is an effort by the rebels to choke off the access routes into Tripoli and to up the pressure on Qadhafi," Nuland said.
