Greek singing legend Demis Roussos dies at 68

Published Updated

imageGreek singer Demis Roussos died early on Sunday morning aged 68. Roussos was famous for his high-pitched voice and melodies inspired by Greek folklore and sold about 60 million records worldwide. Reportedly, He had been in the private hospital with an undisclosed illness for some time.

Roussos was born in Egypt on June 15, 1946 to a Greek father who was forced to take the family back to Greece in 1961 in the middle of the Suez Canal crisis. He shot to fame in the 1970s after teaming up with fellow Greek musician Vangelis in the band Aphrodite's Child, media reported.

As per foreign media reported, Roussos enjoyed a string of international successes as a solo performer in the Seventies. He carried this larger-than-life persona on stage with colourful clothing, and sustained it with a voice.

His last public appearance came in 2013 in Athens, when he was honoured for his work by French Legion of Honour medal. He sold millions of albums with hits like ‘Forever and Ever’ , ‘Mr Reason’ , Goodbye My Love, Goodbye’ and ‘Quand je t’aime’.

A funeral is to take place on Friday at the First Cemetery of Athens, a resting place for many Greek politicians and cultural figures.
