ISLAMABAD: The first unit of 969 MW Neelum Jhelum is expected to complete by December 2015 as around 65-70 per cent work on this important project has been completed so far.
According to official sources, the project would formally be commissioned in 2016 and would add 969 MW cheap hydel electricity to the national grid system.
The Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project is being constructed over Neelum river. Once completed, the project would contribute about 5.15 billion units of electricity annually to the national grid.
Annual benefits of the project have been estimated at Rs 45 billion and it is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
They said the Neelum-Jhelum project would help the country in meeting its growing energy requirements. It would produce 969MW electricity after commissioning.
The sources said that the project was government's priority and required funds had been released for it.
Expressing satisfaction over the pace of work, they said that the project was culminating into an excellent opportunity for socio- economic uplift of the local populace by providing them job opportunities and boosting other economic activities in the project area.
It is pertinent to mention here that Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have been imported from Germany to complete the project before its schedule time.
