Leu firms against euro

BUCHAREST: Romania's leu firmed 1.2 percent against the euro on Monday to 4.5802, with some dealers saying the central bank had intervened to support it.

The leu has been hit by political uncertainty after Prime Minister Victor Ponta's Social Liberal Union suspended President Basescu in July, drawing criticism from the European Commission for undermining democracy and rule of law.

"We believe the central bank intervened to take the leu higher against the euro before the fixing time at 1000 GMT," said a dealer with a foreign bank in Bucharest.
