 ISLAMABAD: Minister for Railways, Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour on Monday said that the railways situation will improve with the addition of new locomotives as presently 123 locomotives are functional in the country.

Replying to a question during question hour, in the National Assembly, the minister said to overcome the present crises situation, the Pakistan Railways (PR) administration has prepared a strategy including maintenance of existing locomotives and procurement of new locomotives.

He added, the Railway is making efforts to get sufficient funds from the government for rehabilitation of required locomotives, rolling stock and purchase of spares parts and fuel etc.

He said that PR is inviting private sector to participate in different activities including rehabilitation of aging locomotives, development of dry ports and commercial management of passenger trains.

Bilour said that the PR is trying to reaching out to the private sector to utilize idle capacity in the railway system through the track access policy.

He said that efforts are being to recover outstanding amount due from other departments and companies. He added the PR is also making efforts for introduction of new signalling system on the network to minimize detention and saving in fuel expenditure.

He said three trains have been outsourced while a new business express train has been launched as joint venture with the private sector. He said that the PR is also planning for new agreements with Pakistan State Oil for uninterrupted supply of fuel.
