OSLO: The right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik, who goes on trial on Monday charged with killing 77 people in July 2011 in Norway, perpetrated one of the most deadly mass killings over the past 25 years.
Here are some previous cases where killers, acting alone, wreaked carnage:
July 22, 2011 NORWAY: Disguised as a policeman, Breivik, now 33, spent more than an hour methodically killing 69 people, most of them adolescents, on the island of Utoeya, in what is believed to be the deadliest shooting ever carried out by a single person.
Shortly before the island massacre, he killed eight people when he blew up a bomb in a van parked in the government block in Oslo.
April 16, 2007 UNITED STATES: Troubled South Korean student Cho Seung-hui, 23, described as a "loner", methodically gunned down 32 students and faculty members at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, before shooting himself in the head.
On the morning of the massacre he mailed rambling hate-filled writings, photographs and videotaped statements to NBC television.
April 28, 1996 - AUSTRALIA: Martin Bryant, 28, carried out a shooting rampage killing 35 at the infamous colonial convict settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania's major tourist attraction. After the shooting spree he barricaded himself in a guesthouse with three hostages, who died. He was arrested as he tried to escape, his clothes in flames, from the building he had just set on fire.
Bryant was sentenced to life in prison.
April 19, 1995 UNITED STATES: Timothy McVeigh, 26, carried out a car-bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City killing 168 and injuring more than 500. Arrested shortly after the attack, the former Gulf war veteran whom authorities and friends described as having right-wing views and a fascination with fire-power was executed on June 11, 2001 after showing no remorse for the killing.
December 5, 1986 COLOMBIA Campo Elias Delgado, an engineer, who fought in the war in Vietnam, killed 29 people in a shooting and stabbing spree, before being shot down by the police. Recently returned from the United States, he fired a total of 350 rounds.
