LAHORE: Lauding the role of lawyers' community as proponents of constitutionalism and guardians of democratic ideals, President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday said the lawyers had always remained at forefront in the fight for democracy, establishing rule of law, constitutionalism and independence of judiciary.
The Pakistan People's Party (PPP), he said, acknowledged the critical and important role of lawyers and would facilitate them in every possible manner in order to accomplish the goal of easy dispensation of justice to an ordinary citizen.
The President expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of Peoples Lawyers Forum (PLF) Punjab led by its President Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa, which called on him here at the Governor House.
The 120-member delegation, besides members of PLF Punjab, also included its divisional and district presidents and other office-bearers.
The President called for expediting all the initiatives and projects initiated by the government for the welfare and uplift of lawyers' community.
He said that easy and speedy dispensation of justice to the ordinary citizens remains the prime objective of the PPP and the government and a big responsibility in this regard lies with the lawyers' community to facilitate speedy dispensation of justice to the aggrieved people.
The President during the meeting highlighted the sacrifices made by the PPP for the cause of democracy and establishing rule of law in the country and the achievements of the PPP-led Government.
He said despite various challenges and hurdles in its way the government had waded through difficulties successfully and achieved significant achievements on many fronts.
While commenting on the government's achievements, the President listed the 18th, 19th and 20th constitutional amendments, the NFC Award, provincial autonomy, Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan, giving rights to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, poverty alleviation through flagship programme BISP, reinstatement of the sacked workers, regularization of contract labour, giving 12 percent shares in state-run enterprises to the workers, plans to give state lands free of cost to the poor women in the command areas of the new dams as the major achievements of the democratic government.
The PPP-led government would continue its forward march on the path of progress and development despite challenges on various fronts, he added. The participants also expressed their candid opinions regarding their issues and the difficulties facing in the pursuit of professional duties.
The PLF office-bearers thanked the President for meeting them and assured their continued full support to his efforts and those of the PPP government for strengthening of democracy, establishing supremacy of the Parliament, facilitating dispensation of justice and securing the country from the tyranny of extremism and militancy.
Governor Punjab Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Waraich, Senator Jahangir Badr, Ms. Mehreen Anwar Raja, Ms Rukhsana Bangash, Ms Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar were also present during the meeting.
The PLF members also adopted a resolution supporting President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusaf Raza Gilani.
Later, PLF President Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa at a press conference explained the salient features of the resolution.
