Tokyo stocks open flat

Published Updated

TOKYO :Tokyo stocks opened almost flat on Wednesday as investors weighed a lower yen against a drop in New York shares on the prospect of no immediate monetary easing by the US Federal Reserve.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened down 4.51 points or 0.04 percent at 10,045.88.

"The index is likely struggle for a direction in the near term," said Hideyuki Ishiguro, supervisor at investment strategy at Okasan Securities.

Markets lack trading cues with Hong Kong, China and Taiwan closed for holidays.

"It's difficult to keep buying the upside," Ishiguro told Dow Jones Newswires.

The dollar bought 82.89 yen in in early Asian trade, up from 81.76 yen a day earlier and 82.78 yen in New York late Tuesday. The euro bought $1.3222 and 109.61 yen compared with $1.3233 and 109.55 yen in New York.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.49 percent to finish Tuesday at 13,199.55 as signs that the Federal Reserve may be reticent to launch a fresh round of stimulus sent the market lower.

Amid amped-up market expectations, the Fed published its minutes for its March 13 policy meeting, which showed there was little sign of a quick move by the Fed on further stimulus measures to spur the economy.
