US stocks perk up on positive manufacturing data

Published Updated

NEW YORK: US stocks started a new quarter on a high note Monday as investors weighed a batch of manufacturing data from the United States, China and Europe.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 51.84 points (0.39 percent) to 13,263.88 in closing trade.

The broad-based S&P 500 advanced 10.35 points (0.73 percent) to 1,418.82, while the tech-rich Nasdaq climbed 28.13 points (0.91 percent) to 3,119.70.

Sentiment was supported by "a report showing US manufacturing accelerated at a rate above economists' forecasts," Charles Schwab analysts said.

"The upbeat US report is highlighting a plethora of global manufacturing reports, and is offsetting mixed data out of China and contraction in the eurozone."
