ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday said the future foreign policy presently under discussion in the joint session of the Parliament would be truly reflective of the aspirations of the people.
Talking to newsmen before leaving for China to attend the Boao Forum, the Prime Minister the parliamentarians gave positive and constructive suggestions on the foreign policy.
He said for the first time in the history of Pakistan that the foreign policy would reflect the aspirations of the people, rejecting the allegations that the decision were not taken by the people's representatives rather taken by somewhere else.
Today the nation is watching that the decisions about the future of nation are being taken by the representatives of the masses as they are in a better position to do so. They are doing the decisions, he added.
The Prime Minister said the Parliament comprising elected representatives of the masses was the real reflection of the aspirations of the people.
Gilani said soon after the attack by NATO troops on the Salala checkpost, a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet was summoned on the same day without wasting time.
The DCC members, who were in different cities at that time, were summoned to Islamabad to discuss this important issue, he added.
The Prime Minister said within hours, the DCC decided to stop the NATO supply and asked the Americans to vacate the Shamsi Airbase and those decisions were endorsed by the Cabinet next day. Even the government boycotted the Bonn conference, he added.
Gilani said then the matter was referred to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security headed by Senator Raza Rabbani and consisting of parliamentarians, heads and leaders of the political parties, to prepare recommendations. The committee was also asked to include the reservations if some one have on this important issue, he added.
He said, "We want consensus, and for which I made sincere efforts that opposition and all the leaders of the coalition partners, including the armed forces leadership should sit on a table to discuss the issues and situation, so that the reservations of all stakeholders could be incorporated."
Gilani said,"Since it was an agreed document which was supported by every body in the National Security Committee so it was easier that there should be unanimous resolution so we should come up from the parliament as one voice that will be the voice of the people of Pakistan".
