WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton vowed Tuesday to push the Syrian opposition for a "unified vision" that protects the rights of all Syrians when she attends weekend talks inIstanbul.
"They must come forward with a unified position, a vision, if you will, of the kind ofSyriathat they are working to build,"Clintonsaid ahead of talks drawing Arab countries and Western powers in the Turkish city on Sunday.
The disparate opposition, which was already holding talks this week inIstanbul, "must be able to clearly demonstrate a commitment to including all Syrians and protecting the rights of all Syrians," the chiefUSdiplomat said.
Washington-- which wants the opposition to represent Sunnis, Alawites, Christians, Kurds and Turkmen -- "will be pushing them very hard to present such a vision inIstanbul" at the Friends of Syria talks on Sunday, she added.
