TV viewers will now be able to change channels, record shows through their eyes

TV viewers are being given more accessible features as now they will be able to switch channels, record a show or search for one through simply blinking their eyes instead of using a remote control.

Telecommunications firm Comcast launched Xfinity X1 eye control feature yesterday that pairs with the current eye-tracking systems and allows viewers to use their eyes just like the way they would use their remote.

Aiming to make it easier for people with physical disabilities to enjoy watching TV, Comcast’s new feature will let users to change the channel, search for a program, pull up the programming guide, set a show to record, and navigate through the menu, all only through a well-place glance, as per The Verge.

However, Comcast’s Vice President of Accessibility, Tom Wlodkowski told Quartz that the TV is just the beginning. He said that the company plans to ultimately integrate eye-tracking technology into its smart home services in order to permit customers control their home’s lights, thermostat or door simply through their eyes.

“Changing the channel on a TV is something most of us take for granted but until now, it was a near-impossible task for millions of viewers,” said Wlodkowski. “When you make a product more inclusive you create a better experience for everyone and we’re hoping our new X1 feature makes a real difference in the lives of our customers.”
