World Poetry Day passes silently

Published Updated

world_poetryISLAMABAD: World Poetry Day, once again, passed silently today as no prominent literary organization arranged any significant event to celebrate the role and achievements of poets, who play crucial role in reforming the society through writings.

Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) and National Language Authority (NLA) which are two leading literary organization, have not arranged any activity to mark the day.

However, print and electronic media gave some coverage to the day to acknowledge the achievements of poets, encouraging them to produce quality literature.

The purpose of celebrating this day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

Talking to APP, an eminent artist and poet Ahmad Habib said "Poetry is the artistic language of blending literature with emotions and feelings and sometime messages".

Art of poetry gives one the courage to raise voice against social evils and bring revolutionary changes in the society through soft expressions of writing, he said adding "it is a powerful tool to utilize imaginative energies and ideologies in the form of words".

Poetry as important genre of Literature can be used as a way to induce positive values in the readers, educating them to live a better life. Poets have a power to build a better world for all through their writings.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the World Poetry Day in 1999.

World Poetry Day also provides an opportunity for children, in particular, to be introduced to poetry at home and in schools.

Classrooms all over the world will be busy with lessons that seek to equip students with the necessary tools to identify the various types of poetry, examine the works of poets and engage in writing their own poetry.

Exhibitions and poetry evenings showcased the work of poets on or around March 21 to mark the day. UNESCO promoted the efforts of small publishers to publish poetry. The day was first observed in 2000.
