NEW YORK: US stocks opened mostly flat Wednesday as traders awaited a key existing-home sales report for clues to a fragile recovery in the depressed housing market.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 0.84 point (0.01 percent) to 13,169.35 in the first five minutes of trade, while the broad-market S&P 500 slipped 0.02 point (0.00 percent) to 1,405.50.
The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite, however, gained 3.72 points (0.12 percent) to 3,077.87, helped by Oracle's positive quarter earnings report.
The action came after stocks posted modest losses Tuesday amid concerns about cooling economic growth in China and mixed data on the troubled US housing construction sector.
The Dow dropped 0.52 percent, while the S&P 500 lost 0.30 percent.
