MQM boycotts President's address to joint sitting of parliament

Published Updated

pakistani_parliament_400KARACHI: Co-ordination Committee of Muttahida Quami Movement MQM Friday announced that MQM would boycott the address of President Asif Ali Zardari to the joint session of the parliament on March 17, 2012.

MQM Co-ordination Committee meeting was held in London and Pakistan simultaneously to deliberate on the situation arising after protest of MQM against collection of extortion money from the business community in Karachi.

The meeting noted that no action was taken by the federal and provincial governments against extortion mafia in Karachi in spite of peaceful protests of MQM in National Assembly and Sindh Assembly.

"Only non-serious statements were made, and President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Gillani had not intervened in this regard.

Keeping in view the apathetic attitude of the government, MQM Co-ordination Committee has decided to boycott the address of President Zardari to the joint sitting of the parliament," MQM press release said.

Co-ordination Committee also decided that MQM will continue to make peaceful protests at every forum as long as practical steps were not taken to "crush the hydra of extortion mafia operating in Karachi."

It held out firm assurances to business community of Karachi that MQM would not abandon them under any condition and support them in every possible manner to protect their rights.
