Circular debt of petroleum sector stands at Rs.394,684mn: NA told

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain on Thursday apprised the Lower House of Parliament that currently the circular debt of petroleum sector stood at Rs.396,684 million.

Replying to a question in Question Hour, he said that non-receipt of payment from the power sector against supplies of oil and gas was the main reason of circular debt.

He said that the government has constituted a committee under the Finance Minister to resolve the issue.

To another question, the minister said that the country has estimated 186,008 million tons reserve of coal.

Giving the break up, he said that Sindh has 185,457 million tons reserve, Punjab 235 million tons, Balochistan 217 million tons and 90 million tons Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa/FATA.

He said that the value of coal was determined by its quality and cost of mining. Presently, the ex-mine mouth sale price of coal varies from Rs.3,500 to Rs.9,000 per ton.

The minister said that 65 percent coal was produced by private sector in the country while the remaining 35 per cent was being produced by public sector.

He said that coal was consumed in brick kilns, cement and other industrial units and power generation.
