LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar paid a surprise visit to Mayo Hospital here on Wednesday and suspended medical superintendent and chief pharmacist of the hospital.

He took action over mismanagement and dereliction of duties and on complaints of patients and their attendants during his hospital visit. He suspended MS Mayo Hospital Dr Tahir Khalil and Drug Controller/ Chief Pharmacist Irshad Hussain.

The MS has been directed to report to the Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department and the chief pharmacist directed to report to the department. Also, Chief Executive Officer Prof Dr Asad Aslam Khan has been issued a warning over poor performance. During his visit to the Emergency Ward, the chief minister met patients and their attendants and inquired about the facilities being provided to them.

He expressed his displeasure at the condition of provision of a CNIC by the patients or their attendants to get wheelchair for patients at the Emergency Ward. "Wheelchairs should be provided without any condition in the hospital as those are meant for the patients," he ordered.

The CM also expressed his displeasure at non-display of signboards for guidance of patients and their attendants in the hospital. The chief minister also inspected the pharmacy of the Emergency Ward and inspected provision of free medicines to patients. He directed the hospital administration to provide all medicines to patients of Emergency Ward free of cost.

He also ordered for keeping the CT scan machines fully functional and quality medical care should be provided in the Emergency Ward. The non-functioning lift in hospital also angered the CM. "Action will be taken against negligent medical and paramedical staff," warned the CM.

The CM also asked doctors about their problems. The CM said that the situation of Mayo Hospital's emergency was not satisfactory, as providing quality healthcare facilities to patients is basic responsibility of the hospital administration.
