ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Oscar winning documentary director and ambassador of violence Against Women Center (VAWC) Sharmeen Obaid on Friday demanded of the government to construct more 'Violence against Women Centers’ across the country for homeless women with all necessary and basic amenities.

In a talk on a private news channel, she said “If we all collectively work for women development to bring positive change in society, then I am sure Pakistan will shine in the global world".

She lauded dynamic leadership role of Pakistani Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) women especially Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife Bushara Bibi for helping downtrodden segments of the society specially women.

She diverted attention of the authorities towards Multan's Violence Against Women center which is facing lack of facilities and basic needs added that it had been neglected by the previous governments for not allocating funds to fulfill its basic necessities.

She warned the VAWC Multan is on the verge of closure as it failed to protect women, those were the victims of persecution, due to lack of facilities and misuse of authority by officials concerned of the department.

She told the prime objective of the VAWC was to streamlining speedy justice delivery process for women and all services to women, including first aid, FIR lodging, prosecution, medical examination, forensics and post-trauma rehabilitation etc. Besides, free legal services were also provided to the victims.

Moreover, she said shelters can play an important role in safeguarding the rights of women and government level shelters must adopt human-rights friendly operating procedures to fully protect women in difficult circumstances and uphold their fundamental rights

Talking about domestic violence, she said that it was not a private matter, rather it was an issue of public concern and must be recognized as such.

She said,  “If you consider man and woman as two wings of humanity, their empowerment is absolutely necessary for it to fly high”.

According to her, women empowerment or strengthening women is the need of the hour as well as a big challenge before the world. If a woman is empowered, she has the potential not only to change the society for the better but can also inspire others to make their lives meaningful, Shermin Obaid said.

Obaid-Chinoy, strongly condemned the daily violence against women and called upon the state on true implementation of Women laws that would protect women from violence of all kinds, whether domestic, in the workplaces.
