Evolving consensus on national issues 'hallmark' of PPP govt: Firdous

Published Updated

firdous-ashiqISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Tuesday the PPP-led government had always taken political parties on board on national issues and taking decisions with consensus was its 'hallmark'.

"The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has introduced a culture of tolerance, co-existence in the society and respecting one another's point of view," she said while presiding over a meeting in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The Information Minister said the government was following the policy of reconciliation as per the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to strengthen the democracy.

She said the PPP did not believe in the politics of victimization and confrontation and it was evident from the fact that there was not a single political prisoner in the country today.

She said the unanimous and back-to-back passage of 18th, 19th and 20th amendments by the Parliament would help remove the loopholes and weaknesses of the political system.

The government has made the Parliament sovereign and supreme, she said and added that it restored the Constitution of 1973 in its original shape.

Firdous said the people's government had not only empowered the provinces but also provided them more resources. The approval of the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award with consensus has strengthened the federation, she added.

She said the government had introduced a proper constitutional procedure for holding general elections in a free, fair and transparent manner.

The government has always kept national interests supreme while formulating foreign policy, she said and added that it got the Shamsi Airbase vacated from the US after NATO attack at Salala check-post and also suspended the NATO supply.

She said a parliamentary committee on national security having the representation from all political parties had formulated terms and conditions to review relations with the United States. Its recommendations would be tabled before joint session of the Parliament, she added.

The Information Minister said the Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan Package launched by President Asif Ali Zardari was to end the sense of deprivation among the people of Balochistan.

The PPP government will also take steps in consultation with national leadership to resolve the problems of Balochistan, she said.

She further said Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani had constituted a 14-member parliamentarian committee to contact political leadership for holding a mutually convened All Parties Conference (APC) on Balochistan.

She said despite challenges, the democratic government had achieved a lot during the last four years.

Terming PPP as a 'symbol of federation' she said, it believed in serving people at their doorsteps.

The minister directed the allied departments of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to highlight four-year achievements of the government.
