Karachi Commissioner Ejaz Ahmed Khan has urged all relevant institutions in the city to play their due role to make tree plantation drive successful that will help improve environment of this provincial capital city. "All the concerned citizens and stakeholders are required to work together for plantation and then look after grown up plants and trees," Khan said, speaking at the launch of the plantation drive of current spring season.
He stressed on the need for promotion of plantation activity in the city that, he said, would reduce harmful effects of environmental degradation and mitigate human sufferings engendered by air and other forms of pollution.
NFEH secretary general Nadeem Ashraf informed the commissioner there had been no check or policing system to foil illegal tree cutting that continued unabated because fearless culprits go unpunished.
He said none of the responsible civic and law-enforcement agencies had been taking action to counter it. He said NFEH would continue to play its due role to promote greenery and tree cover in the city for the cause of improvement of environmental and living conditions for Karachiites.
During plantation drive, 50,000 tree and plant saplings would be planted in the city within two months.
The plantation campaign is being conducted jointly by National Forum for Environment (NFEH) and Health, Saylani Welfare Trust, Bohra community, and Forest Department of Sindh Government.
