Fazenda Eliane, a prominent privately owned farming group operating in the state of Bahia, is looking at the best soya crop yields of its 30-year history, the president of the company told Reuters. The expectation confirms Brazil is en route to harvesting yet another bumper crop this season, with soya output expected to reach an estimated 117.5 million tonnes. Bahia is Brazil's sixth largest producer of soyabeans and the No. 1 state in the Matopiba region, a new agricultural frontier that accounts for about 11 percent of all the soya produced in the South American nation.
"Yields, if not the best, will be among the best (in our history)," Fazenda Eliane President Anildo Kurek told Reuters during a crop tour on Matopiba, as the company starts to collect this year's beans. Citing favourable weather, Kurek estimated this year's stronger yields may help raise Fazenda Eliane's annual revenue by between 10 percent and 20 percent. Bahia harvested 5.1 million tonnes of soyabeans in the 2016/17 crop, according to government data, with yields at 3,242 kg per hectare.
