Nawaz fails to appear before NAB

Published February 11, 2018 Updated February 11, 2018 12:00am

Deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif did not appear before National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday, ignoring the summons issued to him with respect two supplementary references regarding Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments. The NAB on Friday issued summons to Sharif, asking him to appear before the investigators at the NAB Rawalpindi office and record his statement in order to fulfill a legal requirement to get Sharif acquainted with the evidence the Bureau had collected for filing supplementary references regarding Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments in the Accountability Court in next few days.
The Rawalpindi NAB office is now headed by Irfan Mangi, a member of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by the Supreme Court to probe corruption allegations against the Sharif family in the Panama Leaks. The NAB sources said that former prime minister was present in the country but did not appear before NAB investigators till working hours on Saturday; therefore, the Bureau will now file references in the court without recording statements of Sharif.
They said that two supplementary references, which are to be in the court within the next few days, will also comprise the script of an interview given by Nawaz Sharif's son Hussain to a private TV channel. Sources said that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority informed NAB that PEMRA did not keep record for more than 90 days when Bureau asked it to retrieve its record. The NAB, however, decided to make the Pemra's record a part of a supplementary reference.
