Supreme Court decided on Friday to take up a plea filed against incumbent Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over an alleged multibillion dollars scam in the award of import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract back in 2015 in violation of transparency in bidding. The contract was signed when Abbasi was federal minister for petroleum and natural resources.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar will hear the plea of President Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rasheed on February 12. Filing plea under Article 184 (3), Rasheed has made Prime Minster Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, secretaries of the Ministries of Petroleum & Natural Resources, Law & Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, SNGPL through its MD, Interstate Gas Company Pakistan through its managing director, OGRA through its chairperson, SSGC through its secretary, Pakistan State Oil through its managing director and M/s ELENGY Terminal Pakistan Limited through its director respondents.
The AML chief urged the apex court to declare Shahid Khaqan Abbasi disqualified to be a member of the National Assembly in terms of Articles 62 & 63 of the Constitution as he failed to observe Supreme Court's directives in the LNG contract which caused a dent of billions of dollars on the national exchequer.
