The Kissan Board Pakistan (KBP) has urged the judiciary to take suo moto against delay in crushing season because of a cartel formed by the sugar millers who belong to all political parties whether in power or opposition. It urged the judiciary to launch a probe into the financial exploitation of sugarcane growers by the mills.
KBP Central President Ch Nisar Ahmad made these demands while talking to a group of sugarcane growers who called on him at the Board's office here on Saturday. Ch Nisar claimed that the sugar millers had to pay billion of rupees to the sugarcane growers and now they were delaying the crushing season to buy cane from growers on throw away prices.
He said all mill owners whether sitting on treasury or opposition benches in the parliament had joined hands on this issue. Rulers had given them a free hand to exploit the growers. He said crushing would not only deprive growers from a proper return on their crop but also result in decreased area under wheat cultivation during the next year. "Area under wheat cultivation may decline by over 30 percent thus leading to food insecurity," said KBP Central President. The KBP leader warned the sugar millers to refrain from looting the growers or be ready for a direct action by the farmers.
