An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday handed over three accused to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a seven-day remand for allegedly posting blasphemous contents on social media websites. ATC Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi has directed the authorities to present complete investigation report in the next hearing.
During the case hearing, FIA officials informed the court that computers confiscated from the accused have been sent for forensic report. Blasphemy is a criminal offense in Pakistan and can carry the death penalty. Islamabad High Court took notice of the blasphemous contents and ordered the authorities to investigate and take action against the culprits.
On March 14, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered that "blasphemous" content on social media websites be removed or blocked and those posting such material "strictly punished." He instructed foreign ministry to contact international foreign social media firms and demand the blocking of blasphemous posts.
