ECP to issue notices to lawmakers for not providing correct information of assets

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to issue notices to some lawmakers who did not provide correct/complete information about their assets. Sources said that some ministers and important lawmakers from the ruling party are also among those members who provided incorrect/ incomplete information about their assets.
According to the ECP rules, notices would be served on them after the approval of the chief election commissioner. Scrutiny of asset declarations is under way and some irregularities have been detected in the statements of more than 50 lawmakers, sources maintained.
Most of the parliamentarians filed the same details of their assets, which they had submitted in 2013 at the time of contesting general election without making any change in the following years. Some of the lawmakers have also informed the ECP about the vehicles and houses being used by their dependents, but they did not provide the details of their dependents' assets.
An official of ECP said that the scrutiny process of asset declarations filed by parliamentarians has been under way since December 01, 2016 and scrutiny of more than 100 MNAs has been completed. The political finance wing of ECP is carrying out scrutiny in collaboration with the FBR, auditor general, provincial revenue departments, FIA and other institutions. After a long delay, the ECP approved creation of the directorate of political finance. The directorate is tasked with auditing the statement of assets and liabilities of all legislators.
