601 students were awarded specialisation degrees in four disciplines at the 51st Convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan on Wednesday. The ceremony was held at its headquarters in Karachi. Professor Michael Lavelle Jones. president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh who was the chief guest at the convocation, said it was an honour to receive a Fellowship of the CPSP.
He told recipients of the College's Fellowships that they had earned the honour with hard work and continuous striving for achieving their goal. He added that he has been associated with surgery in gastroenterology and pediatrics for 40 years. He advised the fellows to treat their patients with care and love. Professor Salman Faridi, chairman and executive director of the Liaquat National Medical College, awarded the Fellowships.
Professor Zafar Ulah Chaudhry, the president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, told the audience that five college principles and academics led the College to be ranked among some of the best postgraduate medical colleges and institutions in the world.
He said the College is now recognised as an Institution which has proved its worth abroad, as it is in the country. It now stands shoulder to shoulder with Royal Colleges of UK and Canada and its fellowship is recognized by global academia and job markets of the Arabian Peninsula.
He said the World Health Organisation recently recognised its Department of Medical Education as the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education of North America has accredited CPSP in recognition of its educational activities. He recalled that postgraduate medical education in Pakistan began in 1962 with establishment of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, which went on to accredit 206 institutions across Pakistan.
