The Lahore High Court Chief Justice Shah here Monday directed law officer to come up with a clear reply on Tuesday (today) to a question as to when the committee looking into Dawn leaks would complete its probe. The interior ministry on Monday had failed to apprise the court as to when an inquiry into the news leak scandal would be finalized.
A federal law officer told the court that the committee seized with the inquiry has been given an extension till February 7. However, further instructions from the ministry were not available about the completion of the inquiry, he added. The chief justice was hearing a petition challenging the formation of the inquiry committee headed by retired justice Amer Raza A. Khan.
The petitioner, a PPP-affiliated lawyer Ilyas Khan, through his counsel Babar Awan argued that the six extensions had been given to the committee in order to save the prime minister in the scandal. He said all members of the committee belonged to the Punjab province and had close connections with the Sharif family. He said a judicial commission representing all the provinces should be formed on the matter.
