Faiza Zafar of Sindh upset top seeded Zoya Khalid of Sindh on the opening day of the 7th edition of the ICMS National Senior Women Squash Championship, which got under way here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Thursday. Begum Base Commander Peshawar was the chief guest on this occasion who formally inaugurated the Championship carrying a purse prize of Rs 0.1 million. Former World Champion Qamar Zaman, official players and large number of spectators were also present during the opening day match played between Faiza Zafar and Zoya Khalid.
Faiza, who recently played a key role in driving NUST Islamabad to victory in the All-Pakistan Inter-University Women Squash Championship, played very excellent game by putting Zoya Khalid under tremendous pressure in the 39th minute battle. Faiza Zafar did not give much time to Zoya Khalid of ZTBL to settle down in the whole proceedings and thus lost the match in straight sets, the score was 11-7, 11-6 and 11-7. Faiza Zafar fully dominated the proceedings and gave no chance to her rival to strike back.
Sammer Anjum of Pakistan Wapda, currently ranked No 2, is the top seeded player, followed by Riffat Khan of Punjab, Saima Shoukat of Wapda, Rushna Mehboob of ZTBL, Madina Zafar of Sui Southern Gas Pipe Line, Komal of Wapda, Zoya Khalid of ZTBL, Aiman Shahbaz of Wapda, Noor Ul Ain Ijaz of Punjab, Habiba Khan of ZTBL, Amna Latif of ZTBL, Noor Ul Huda of SNGPL, Amina Fayyaz of PIA, Noorena Shams of KP, Kainat Khan of KP, Laiba Ijaz of Wapda will vie for the top honor.
