Chairman Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) Aziz Ahmed has urged the Sindh Chief Minister to direct Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) to release water into the tannery zone pipeline without any further delay. He informed the CM that despite the laying of Rs 84 million pipeline for water supply to Tannery Zone, the KWSB was yet to release the water. "Leather exports are worst-hit due to the lack of infrastructural facilities and the utilities," he said.
Gulzar Firoz, former Chairman, PTA (Central), Abdul Salam, Vice Chairman and Amir Majeed, Chairman, Local Bodies Committee, PTA (Southern Zone) have expressed their satisfaction over the beginning of the carpeting of the Road 5000 leading from Shan Chowk to Tannery Zone.
They said that after the recent visit of Commissioner Karachi Aijaz Ahmed Khan, the industrialists of the area were keen to see the implementation of his orders for lifting of solid-waste and garbage from the tannery zone and cleaning of nullahs. They hoped that solid-waste lifting operation would begin soon.
The PTA representatives further said that many foreigners visited Sector 7-A (Tannery Zone) where there were more than 150 tanneries were employing more than 15,000 workers. They said that the area was producing more than 50% of the total exports of leather and leather goods hence, the carpeting of Road 5000 was absolutely necessary. They hoped that the area cleaning operation would also begin soon.
