German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble on Friday insisted in a newspaper interview that Britain cannot serve up its own tailored menu on negotiating its exit from the European Union. His comments to the Financial Times echo those of European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker, who has said Britain could not expect "a la carte" access to the EU's single market if it brings back immigration controls.
Schauble told the business daily: "There is no a la carte menu. There is only the whole menu or none." He said: "Until the UK's exit is complete, Britain will certainly have to fulfil its commitments. Possibly there will be some commitments that last beyond the exit... even, in part, to 2030." Schauble also said that the EU "cannot grant any generous rebates" to the UK.
