"World Diabetes Day-2016" was marked here like other parts of the world on Monday with a renewed pledge that all out efforts would be made to check burden of diabetes which is mother of all diseases and destroys human body silently. To mark the day, medical camps, walks, symposiums and other awareness sessions were held in which experts highlighted current trends of disease and efforts to combat it.
In the medical camps organised in different hospitals including Lahore General Hospital, Fatima Memorial Hospital, Shalimar Hospital, health professionals checked diabetic patients and distributed free medicines. Leading a walk at the LGH, Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute and Lahore General Hospital (LGH), Professor Ghias-un- Nabi Tayyab said that threat of diabetes can be checked by raising awareness among masses about timely diagnose and preventive measures against the disease.
Professor Tayyab told media that current number of diabetic patients in Pakistan is 7 million which can be doubled if emergent steps are not taken immediately. Dr Imran Hassan Khan said that diabetes is dangerous to human heart and kidneys. It can also affect eyesight. He stressed upon parents to keep close eye on their bulky kids and watch their habits of television and computer watching.
While addressing an awareness camp at Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Punjab University Chief Medical Officer Dr Tahseen Zameer said that the major reason behind kidney failure was diabetes and we must eat healthy food and do exercise in our routine life. Talking to faculty members and students, Dr Tahseen Zameer briefed about losses of fast food, junk food and cholesterol. A lot of teachers and faculty members were also tested for sugar their sugar level on the spot.
