Apple has disclosed that its iPhone 8 smartphones had a defect and that it has already started a repair program, fixing them for free.

Just yesterday, Apple announced that ‘a very small percentage’ of iPhone 8 smartphones have logic boards with a ‘manufacturing defect’ that lead to freezing the screen, restarting the device unexpectedly, or even causing it to not turn on.

Admitting the fault, Apple has announced to repair the eligible defected devices for free, by replacing its logic board. Users can check if they have affected phone by putting the phone’s serial number into a web form at Apple’s website, wrote Business Insider.

Apple wrote, “Affected units were sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and the U.S.”

However, the free repair offer comes in with few conditions. If the phone’s screen is cracked or there’s any other kind of damage, the user would have to get that fixed first. If the user chooses Apple to fix it themselves, it will charge them for that repair, even beyond the free logic board replacement.

For repairing the phone, the user can either take the device to any authorized Apple retail center, an Apple retail store, or mail it in. in any of the case, Apple informed that the phone will be mailed away to one of its main repair facilities to get repaired.

Also, Apple made it clear that the phone will be examined before any service to verify that it is eligible for the program. Also, the program does not affect iPhone 8 Plus or other iPhone models. Apple also informed users to backup their iPhone to iTunes or iCloud.
