The opposition parties on Monday nominated Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for presidential elections.

Opposition parties except Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), have fielded Rehman's name who will shortly submit his nomination papers today. The PPP has stuck to their nominee-  Aitzaz Ahsan who has already submitted his nomination papers to the Islamabad High Court, local media reported.

The opposition parties were unable to form a consensus regarding candidate for the office of the president. A deadlock persisted between PML-N and PPP after Asif Ali Zardari fielded Ahsan's name. PPP's Khursheed Shah was of the opion that Ahsan as the president would be an asset for Pakista.

Today is the last day to submit nomination papers for the president slot. The Election Commission of Pakistan has given the candidate till noon today to file nomination papers.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) candidate for the president slot Arif Alvi has prepared his nomination papers for contesting in the presidential vote. The elections for the post of president will be held on September 4.

Voting will be held through secret balloting. The members of Senate, National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies will be participating in the elections.
