Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who will lead Pakistan delegation to the 70th session of United Nations General Assembly in New York from September 25 to 30, 2015, will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines of the session but no meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi is scheduled.
According to Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah, the Prime Minister will address the General Debate of the General Assembly on September 30, in which he will articulate the government's vision of a peaceful neighbourhood and economic development, and share with the world community Pakistan's position and priorities on key international and regional issues.
The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the margins of the session, with over 150 world leaders scheduled to attend this year's session coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
But no bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sharif and Prime Minister Modi is scheduled. However, sources said that the two leaders may get the opportunity for a brief encounter or handshake during their stay in New York.
Sharif will also attend receptions to be hosted separately by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the US President Obama in honour of heads of states, where, according to the sources, a brief encounter between the two premiers was possible.
Pakistan has already stated that there was no proposal on the table for a bilateral meeting between the two prime ministers but sources maintained that both the leaders would be staying at the same hotel - Waldorf Astoria Hotel - and the two may get an opportunity for a meeting.
The Prime Minister left for London on Tuesday where he would also hold meetings with his British counterpart David Cameron during his stopover in London on his way to New York.
The sources said that Pakistan has also prepared dossiers on Indian interference in Pakistan's internal affairs that would be presented at an appropriate platform at the UN.
On 27 September, the Prime Minister will address the UN Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. This comprehensive and transformative Agenda comprising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sets a new global development framework for the next fifteen years, replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Nawaz will also co-host, with President Obama and other world leaders, a summit on UN Peacekeeping and according to Foreign Office spokesperson, the high level meeting will reaffirm the political commitment and support of member states to UN Peacekeeping.
Over the years, he said that Pakistan has made substantial contribution to the United Nations efforts in carrying out its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, as a leading participant in UN Peacekeeping Missions around the world.
The Prime Minister will also participate in a High-Level Roundtable on South-South Co-operation, and the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, being hosted by President Xi Jinping of China.
"The Prime Minister's participation at the Annual Session of the General Assembly signifies Pakistan's continuing strong role and engagement with the United Nations and the international community to promote collective responses to the multifaceted challenges of global peace, security and development," Qazi Khalilullah added.
In New York, a crucial meeting would also be held to discuss the Afghan National Reconciliation process. The meeting, according to the sources, would be attended by senior officials from US and China to discuss the ways to take forward the Afghan peace process.
They said that Prime Minister's Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will represent Pakistan in the important meeting while the Afghan side will be represented by Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan.
