At least five people were electrocuted by broken-down power lines while scores more sustained injuries in different rain-related accidents as a thunderstorm accompanied by ferocious winds and pockets of heavy rainfall far swept through the city, according to a private TV channel. Ruthless gully washers whipped the metropolis of 20 million with an unheard-of vengeance causing power breakdowns, electrocutions, road accidents, traffic snarl-ups.
As soon as the rain started pouring, K-Electric's 230 power feeders tripped offline. Thousands of customers in the different districts had lost power but that electricity was yet to be restored. "We are stuck inside our homes without power for more than an hour now. I don't see the it resuming anytime soon," a local resident told private TV.
According to latest reports, the number of electrocutions has risen to five in just under two hours and most of them were reported from Orangi Town, Sher Shah, Malir. Witnesses told the police that two victims were killed by a dangling live wire in Nazimabad. The Meteorology Department said that at least 10-48 millimetres of rain had fallen on the city so far.
