All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA), Sindh Chapter, and Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) on Monday ended their protest after Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) assured them to revert to three-day gas closure schedule in a week. The associations jointly held a protest in front of the SSGC head office against continuous gas closure. A number of transporters and CNG owners from Karachi and Hyderabad were present on the occasion.
Speaking to media persons, APCNGA's Sindh chapter Chairman Shabbir Sulaiman said that SSGC was carrying out 48 hours continuous gas closure to CNG stations, which he termed sheer violation of Supreme Court's orders. He said that on the basis of Article 158 of the Constitution, the Sindh High Court had also issued an order, strictly prohibiting closure of CNG stations in Sindh being a gas producing province.
He said that CNG stations had been facing three-day gas closure for the last one year, however, last week, the SSGC management had notified four-day gas closure. "The citizens have to wait for hours in queues in the holy month of Ramazan to get their CNG kits filled," he added. Sulaiman said that the SSGC management had assured to revert to the old three-day gas closure schedule. Two protesters fell unconscious due to extreme heat, who were rushed to a hospital. Speaking on the occasion, KTI President Irshad Bhukhari said that that thousands of transporters and common people had been affected due to continuous gas load shedding by SSGC. "If the SSGC did not provide reasonable gas to transporters, we would go for a countrywide wheel jam strike," he warned.
