KARACHI: Mayor Wasim Akhtar Friday said Karachi Metropolitan Corporation would name a road, library or playground after Jamsheed Marker and also hold a condolence reference for paying tribute to him.

He stated this while condoling with Jamsheed Marker's daughter Nilofer Marker here at her home, a statement issued here said.

Wasim said that late Jamsheed Marker would always be held in high esteem as an outstanding professional, who served the noble cause of international peace and commendably projected Pakistan's interests. He served the country as an ambassador and high commissioner in different countries for a long time.

The mayor said that the death of two renowned personalities, Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi and Jamsheed Marker had saddened the people of Karachi.

Jamsheed Marker, he said, was Pakistan's distinguished diplomat, who served as country's top envoy to the United States, United Nations and number of countries. He earned the distinction of the world's longest serving ambassador for serving as a diplomat for at least 30 years in ten different capitals of the world.

Beginning his diplomatic assignments in 1965 when he was appointed Pakistan's ambassador to Ghana, he has been country's ambassador in more countries than any other diplomat and has served in United States, Canada, France, Germany, Romania, Japan, as well as in the United Nations, he added.

In 2013, he was awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz, one of the highest civilian awards by the Government of Pakistan.      He said that he also had a passion for cricket, as he become one of Pakistan's earliest radio cricket commentators, along with Omar Kureishi.

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif ur Rehman, senior director coordination Masood Alam, director media management Ali Hassan Sajid were also present on the occasion.
