ISLAMABAD: As severe heat wave is sweeping many parts of the country, medical expert on Friday advised the public to take precautions against heat stroke while venturing outdoors.

ENT Specialist Dr Amna Owais talking to private news channel advised the public to keep themselves safe from scorching sunlight and drink plenty of water. She also suggested to wear light colour clothes and to prevent drinking contagious beverages from the vendors.

Mostly children and elderly people are more vulnerable to this kind of situation so preventive measures are necessary to save them from expected heat-wave like situation, she said.

Specialist informed that tiredness, water scarcity in body, weakness, vomiting and breath disorder are some common symptoms which may lead a person towards heat-stroke.

She advised the citizen to avoid unnecessary exposure in sun, cover their heads if necessary to go outside, increase water intake, and abstain from taking tea, coffee and cold-drinks to avoid heat-stroke.

"Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are big risks during the hot summer weather. One must move to a cooler place, stop all exertional activities like walking and drink cool water, she added.

Acute Enteritis resulting in diarrhoea is also common in this weather.  the coming days are going to be worst for the residents as the mercury level is expected to rise.

Dr explained that People with prolonged illness should take extra care. "People with cardiovascular disease should take extra precautions during the summer months.

People with weaker hearts may not be able to pump blood efficiently enough to keep the body cool and the blood pressure at a high enough level. Dehydration also results in thickening of the blood and enhances the proneness to clotting," said Dr.

Expert add that having plenty of water will help to dilute the body liquids, as well as calcium oxalate, the substance that forms most types of kidney stones.

"Making sure you are drinking enough water is one way you can help to prevent development of renal stones," she said.
