Ball tempering scam: Cricket Australia bans Smith, Warner for 1 year

Former Australian captain Steven Smith and former vice-captain David Warner have been banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia for their roles in the pre-meditated ball tempering during the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa.

Meanwhile, Cameron Bancroft, the player to actually tamper with the ball, has been banned for nine months by the board. An official announcement of their penalties is expected to be announced soon.

Smith is due to depart for Australia today and will speak publicly upon his arrival home in Sydney. Warner and Bancroft have already arrived in Australia following the ball tempering row.

The scandal broke after Bancroft was caught on camera using tape to rough up the ball in the third Test in Cape Town.

Darren Lehmann remains as Australia's coach, despite media reports that he was set to resign over the ball-tampering incident, with wicket-keeper Tim Paine taking over as captain.

Matthew Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have been named as replacements for Smith, Warner and Bancroft.
